Created in the middle of the 20th century the Dorset Fire Department was originally a part of the Lake of Bays Fire Service; however, it later "crossed the road" and became a part of Algonquin Highlands Fire Service.

The Association was created in 1995 and has been supporting the Dorset Community ever since through purchasing essential equipment and participating in community events.

The Dorset Volunteer Fire Department serves an area of approximately 600 square kilometers. In addition, it provides assistance to the other Algonquin Highland Fire Departments (Oxtongue Lake and Stanhope) as well as to Lake of Bays Fire Departments.

As of January 2011 Dorset has:

  • 8 members
  • 1 pumper
  • 1 3,000 (Cdn) gallon tanker
  • 4 wheel drive medical truck
  • 4 wheel drive equipment truck
  • Boat and trailer
  • ATV with trailer
  • Snowmobile with rescue boggan
  • A wide variety of portable pumps and porta-tanks
  • A variety of forest fire fighting equipment
